Case study: dust extraction system at Meldgaard waste sorting plant, Aalborg

Industry: Recycling
Project purpose: Installation of dust aspiration from transfer points of waste sorting line.

At waste sorting plants such as Meldgaard, the shredding, screening and separation processes generate significant amounts of dust of widely varying fraction and composition. Its source is both dry municipal waste and organic materials, which are easily pulverized by mechanical processing. The variability of the waste stream and the presence of light, fibrous or biodegradable substances make the dust load heterogeneous and difficult to predict. That’s why NEU-JKF designed a dust extraction plant characterized by high flexibility of operation, high filtration efficiency and resistance to conditions typical of recycling and waste treatment facilities. The plant was designed in accordance with the technological requirements of the facility and environmental standards.

The facility receives 48,000-58,000 tons of municipal waste per year. At the Meldgaard sorting plant in Alborg, about 25-33% is food waste.

Key elements of the installation

1. At the center of the implemented system is the SuperJet bag filter, which, thanks to its high efficiency and separation performance, can perfectly cope with the removal of dust of different characteristics. The filter with minimized size, equipped with explosive membranes.
– Capacity: 35,000 m³/h.

2. The JK-70MTD 55kW fan mounted on the clean side. This solution saves about 30% energy compared to positive pressure installations.

3. Carbon filter in front of the exhaust stack, integrated with the SuperJet filter. Its function is to reduce offensive odor.
– Capacity: 35,000 m³/h.

4. The system includes comprehensive galvanized steel piping, with pick-up points (hoods) throughout the plant’s process line.

Technical solutions

All intake points were connected by a piping system to the filter units. A carbon filter was installed between the filter and the fan to reduce odors. The filtered material falls by gravity into big-bags placed under the filter. The filtered air goes to the atmosphere.
SuperJet filter with side inlet, so that the contaminated air does not come into contact with the filter fabric, which significantly extends the life of the filter bags.
The state-of-the-art EC Cleaning filter bag cleaning system cleans the filter units with compressed air. The tubes are equipped with specially designed jet nozzles positioned precisely above each filter unit. The jet nozzles ensure optimum cleaning of the filter units.
The filter is equipped with explosion-proof membranes mounted in the roof of the filter (VFV system), so there is no need to designate safety zones around the filter

Security solutions

Due to the classification of dust in explosion group St1, the entire system was designed in full compliance with the ATEX directive, which ensures safe operation also in conditions of increased risk of explosion. The system is equipped with VFV® explosion membranes located on the roof of the filter and a JK-50 EXS rotary valve, which effectively minimize the effects of possible hazardous events.

Benefits for Meldgaard

Cleaner air: Efficient dust removal significantly improves working conditions, supporting the protection of employee health and reducing the negative impact on the environment.
Higher level of safety: ATEX-compliant solutions significantly reduce the risk of explosion, raising the overall level of safety in the plant.
Better efficiency: Reducing dust improves the flow of technological processes and reduces the likelihood of malfunctions or machine downtime.

Summary
The realization with Meldgaard is a great example of NEU-JKF’s ability to respond comprehensively and flexibly to the dust collection needs of many industries. This is particularly true in recycling, where the variable composition and diverse sources of dust pose a major challenge. Using cutting-edge technology and a wealth of experience, NEU-JKF develops solutions that ensure high standards of operation, safety and real support for sustainability.
